Environmental Situation: Drought

In 2016, a harsh and severe drought hit Somaliland affecting more than 240,000 people due to harsh climatic conditions triggered by El-Nino phenomenon.  The communities in the most affected regions were Awdal, Maroodijeeh and Gabiley who are Agro-pastoralists and Pastoralist. These regions are considered as the food basket of the country. The Government of Somaliland declared drought on August 10, 2015 and appealed to Governments and organizations to support with food items, water and health services to cater for the affected people for the affected people.

HAVOYOCO has conducted and participated with joint assessments with different organization such CARE, NERAD and OCHA a drought assessment to get detailed information on the overall context and situation of affected communities and on the extent and type of the most critical humanitarian needs. HAVOYOCO has responded to the drought affected people of Gabiley district. As drought is the major hazard in this country and occurs frequently, HAVOYOCO will respond to the needs of affected communities within its resilience program (Pastoral and Agro-pastoral).
