 Increased and Improved the Agricultural Practices of Carro-malko and Garabcad Villages

the funding from Norwegian development Fund NDF, HAVOYOCO is implementing sustainable pastoral and agro-pastoral project in Somaliland, the project targets communities in Gabiley district.  One of the components that the project addresses includes tackling the key driving factors of insecurity for poor pastoralist and agro-pastoralist.

By focusing the project’s main aim of improving agricultural practices of target locations, on June 2017, HAVOYOCO implemented and conducted

  • Agronomic practices/crop production training for 60 farmers (50% female) from Caro-malko and Garab cad villages
  • Supported 200 poor households in Caro-malko and Garab cad villages with tillage hours and distributed them quality seeds.

The main objectives of the training were

  • Training communities on farm techniques including crop rotation and types of irrigation
  • Introducing communities on intercropping
  • Training farmers advantages of using natural fertilizers like combusting
  • Introducing farmers on land preparation, means of overcoming soil erosion
  • Illustrating means of selecting health seeds
  • Training on means of overcoming seed diseases

During the training, the contents were applied according the environment and climatic conditions of target locations

Likewise, On June 2017 HAVOYOCO implemented tractor/tillage hour activities in Carro Malko and Garabcad villages of Gabiley district. A total of 400 tillage hours were distributed among 200 poor families from both villages, selected according to their vulnerability including but not limited to families with low income, families with more children or having aged people as well as female and child headed households, the selection process was independently carried out by community village development committee with the monitoring and supervision of HAVOYOCO staff.

The main objectives of tillage hours were to increasing crop production support the most vulnerable HHS who could not afford the cost of tractors and to improve the daily livelihood of the beneficiaries by encouraging then good farming practices.

On the other hand, the beneficiaries of tillage hours were distributed seeds mainly cereals like sorghum and maize, legumes like cowpea and seeds of fruits e.g. tomatoes.

As intended, the distribution of seeds and tillage hours was successfully accomplished and local community were very satisfied the process from the beginning to an end, in addition the beneficiaries were very thank full to both HAVOYOCO and DF Norway for their support and cooperation and they were willing to make use of this intervention and continue their support and cooperation with HAVOYOCO.
